Mnemba Island Lodge Article

Mnemba Island Lodge

You can relax at Mnemba Island Lodge on a tiny island - wooded with palms and pines and ringed by white sand - just off Zanzibar's north-east coast. The principal activities are swimming, snorkelling and diving in the ocean, which teems with tropical fish. There are 10 secluded bandas (bungalows) made from thatched palm leaves and pine branches, and open to the breeze. They are spacious but simple, with huge beds and handcrafted furniture.

A magnet for adventurers, Men-of God, explorers and conquerors

Mnemba Island, off the north coast of the main island is very exclusive. Condé Nast Traveller has picked it as one of the three most romantic ocean destinations in the world. That super model Naomi Campbell and her beautiful friends have been here is proof enough for me. I also think the earlier Sultan’s would be much pleased to know that the Sultan of Software, Bill Gates has been on holiday in this very island.

Where are the world's best beaches and how do you get to them without spending a fortune? - Sarah Hartley offers a definitive tour

MNEMBA ISLAND BEACHES, ZANZIBAR TO THE north-east of Zanzibar is Mnemba Island, which has the kind of beautiful but isolated beaches where at least one book can be read daily.
With sea breezes following you and a smattering of palm trees for shade, a walk around the entire island (while never leaving the sand) takes an exhausting 20 minutes.
Tourism is a relatively new concept here so the pace is slower than slow - even putting on suntan lotion feels like a chore.
When you've mustered the energy, there is swimming and snorkelling over the coral reefs, where you'll probably decide to jack in your job and go travelling.
It's that kind of beach.
Caveats: If you are already exhausted then do not attempt this trip unless you intend to spend at least a couple of weeks here. The flight to Nairobi is just over nine hours, followed by more than an hour's flight to Zanzibar and a short boat ride to Mnemba Island.
